my cousin just got a smartphone and I asked her if she needed some kind of antivirus since it had internet on it and she didn't know so I would like to find out

Most phones do not need an antivirus but various antivirus software apps can be downloaded if you want to take extra caution. I personally have never have or seen any instance of a phone getting a virus.

There's a good program for BlackBerry and Android phones. It's called Lookout Mobile Security and it's free.
