Do devices exist that prevent handheld recorders from working?

I tried to get a tape recording of a meeting but realize that, while I was in their meeting room, nothing recorded. However, when I was alone in a separate room, I was able to record fine.

Technically, any strong magnetic field can cause a handheld recorder, whether analog or digital, to fail to work. Your best test of the truth of your experience would be to go back to the room that the meeting was held in and see if the recorder still worked there. Of course, the magnets could be turned off whenever a meeting was not in session.

It is far more likely that you accidentally failed to press all the correct buttons on your recording device or that your batteries had run low than that the room is surrounded with giant hidden rare earth magnets.
