what are some good usenet newsgroup services these days?
my ISP (earthlink) used to supply the newsgroups, but then stopped about 3 years ago. Any other places to find and read usenet newsgroups?

Microsoft offers excellent newsgroups for all (or almost all) of their products. You can access them via most email clients (and certainly Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook) here: msnews.microsoft.com

For actual "news," I use Google Reader with RSS feeds so I can't help you there.
