Reading Usenet Newsgroups with "news://"?

I am trying to join the newsgroup: news://alt.atheism

I don't know what I would need to access something with the "news://" prefix, I tried in thunderbird and other usenet news readers but keep getting an unable to connect to server error.

Is the site down? Or am I using an invalid program/address? It seems like most news groups use "news."site.com so I am not sure what I would need to read "news://"

Thanks!
