SPOILER WARNING:
I would not have shot the 4 people. I would have, instead, waited in the car with the others. Perhaps the creatures would have not noticed the people in the car, as there were cars scattered everywhere. At least then the people would have had a slim chance at survival (and as we know, they would have been rescued!!) By shootng everyone, death is CERTAIN!!!
