Do horses in battle movies get hurt?

I was watching The Last Samurai today and noticed in the last seen where the Japanese army began to bombard the samurai's riding the horses. They were getting knocked down and flying. Not to mention, you can scare them from the sudden blast due to special affects. So do the horses get hurt in any way?

No, ever since all the animals were killed by the Japanese in Milo and Otis there has been a world wide crackdown on animal abuse in movies. They killed several cats and dogs in that movie by throwing them over cliffs and such, and drowning them trying to shoot the river scenes.

many big movie producers don't hurt the horses in the movies because they can get sued by the government or a animal protection service

It's usually special effects. Otherwise, the animal trainers get them used to the sounds and sights of the set. If the animals were really hurt, the ASPCA and animal rights groups would definately be there to help and make sure it never happened again.

I can't imagine with all the animal rights and watch-dog (no pun intended) groups out there, any production company getting away with hurting animals while filming a movie.

Many of them are trained from birth and understand that loud noises aren't always dangerous. They aren't like regular horses who just hang out in a corral all day.

I don't think so. Yea, unfort there are some accidents on movie sets, even with humans.
I know that the ASPCA or the Humane Society are supposed to be on the sets of movies or tv shows with animals on them.

Just like there is someone there to keep and eye on the kids, they do that with the animals too.

No they don't. Most of the time they get better treatment than the actors do. Trained horses and animals are hard to find. So they get the Gold treatment
