Did Mr. Darcy Really Think Lizzie Was Barely Tolerable?

In the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice Mr. Darcy tells Mr. Bingley that Lizzie was barely tolerable. He told him that Jane was the only handsome woman in the room. Yet Lizzie caught his eye at the dance and he was watching her that night. Did he really think Lizzie was handsome and didn't want to admit it to Mr. Bingley or did he think Lizzie really was not that handsome? I have watched this movie numerous times and I'm still not clear about it in this part of the movie.

if i remember the book correctly, he didn't like Lizzie at all during the party when he first met her. his interest grew over time later.

The interpretation of movie is up to you. In the book, he did think she was beneath his attention and was mean to her at that first dance.
