Thread: Is the sale of golliwogs racist?

I went into a hardware store on saturday, and on the counter were giant fluffy gollies for sale.
Is this racist? seems a bit old fashioned to sell them in the 21st century. Who would buy them?
Is it making fun of blacks?
What do you whites think?

I really don't know. They were used specifically as a marketing tool for Robertson's until about 20 years ago I think. My strange small town also sells a lot of them and they do appeal to all the pensioners that live here. I suppose the only way to know if they're racist is to ask black people's opinion. As far as I know, they never actually 'made fun' of black people, they're generally playing musical instruments, but - as I'm white- I have no say in whether they're offensive or not.
