Penalties for drug sales - near churches???

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080205/ap_on_fe_st/odd_grandmother_arrested;_ylt=AnuRBQKkdfl2Rgvql9OE IRPtiBIF

According to the story, this grandmother was arrested for selling and possessing crack cocaine (and powered cocaine) from her home - which was located within 1000 feet of a church...

Now, I understand the purpose of giving stiff penalties to drug sellers near SCHOOLS - but why near churches?? Let's make sure we understand this: stiffer penalties are to protect vulnerable children from being suckered into trying and buying drugs.

So, whats the excuse about Church?? Are Church-goers somehow vulnerable to drug abuse, so stiffer penalties are given to sellers near churches to protect church-goers?? You cant tell me this is because the Church is a learning center - if that was the case, then she would be in trouble for selling within 1000 feet of a school, not a church...

So what is your issue? Is an "excuse" needed? Churches often house pre-schools and other educational programs.

That's ridiculous. It's like they somehow think their building is better than the next building.

Yes, she shouldn't be selling street drugs anywhere. I read an article today about a woman who had her twelve pack of Natural Light seatbelted into the front seat while her six year old was in the back seat unbelted. Some people have no common sense.

I agree. The concept seems a bit ridiculous!
