I wasn't participating in the yard sale and I didn't even know they were having it, but it was in our shared car port this morning and when I went downstairs I realized that some of my personal belongings were gone--a bike pump, some ceramic pots, and some other things I had in storage. The husband told me it was an honest mistake, that they were things he thought belonged to his wife that she had brought down. I didn't really know how to respond and he didn't say anything beyond "sorry" and then explain what happened. We aren't friends, but we are friendly with each other as we are neighbors.
Should I expect them to replace those items, specifically the things I really need like my bike pump? Should I just ask them for the money they made selling those specific items? Should I just let it go? What would be the most cordial way of handling this situation?
