If you buy a home in NY do the prior owners have rights, after the sale, to

property that was in the home? ? My husband and I bought a home over a year ago now. Left in the home was some dressers and a table and chairs set as well as a dining room hutch. After signing the papers a moving in the prior owners came into our home, using a key they had but without us knowing and without telling us, and took the dining room set and hutch. There were even things on the table that she removed and placed on the floor. We called her asking if she had come into the home when she said yes because she wanted that stuff. We were very very upset as she relly had broken into our home. When we bought the home we thought we were buying the keys as well but instead she kept one for herself. We have since changed the keys. She is now, over a year later saying she wants the dressers that were in there. She said she had tlked with my FATHER and he said he would keep them for her. My father says he NEVER said that. But also my father had nothing to do with the purchase of the home it was my husband and I who bought it. She is now calling me my husband my parents and saying nasty things. We do not have the dressers as we thought they came with the home. We also had a washer.dryer fridge etc. that were left that came with the home at purchase. Under NY state laws would she have any right to the property? We bought it and there is NOTHING in the paperwork about storing it and for a year? She claims she tried to stop by some but we are never home. Then goes off on me about why am I never home? And calls me a child and acting like one because I will not return the dressers which I no longer have. She says I deserve t have my life fall apart and swore at me and told me that I have something bad cming my way becuase of Karma or something. She keeps coming up with excuses as to why she waited this long. Anyone know NY state laws?

Normally after closing, anything left in the house is yours. I would have called the cops after they came in the first time. They did break into your home!

Do you have caller ID? If not, it's time to spend the extra money for it. When she calls, just don't answer. You have no business with this woman.

The FIRST thing you do when buying a new place is change all the locks. You blew it by not calling the cops to report the B&E. I have no idea why you wouldn't.

You should have had a final walk-through before the closing and if you wanted the stuff had them sign something affirming abandonment or if you didn't want it, demanding it be removed or you would use money from the escrow fund to dispose of it.

I would block her phone number and return unopened all letters she sends. If she persists call the police.

That has got to be illegal. It's your house, I consider what she did as breaking and entering and I wouldve called the police. She sold the house, when the closing was over, you took possession, she has no rights to anything on the property unless you worked it out prior to closing. If she really wants it, I would charge her a $100 a month fee for the past storage just to piss her off. You cant abandon property and expect to get it later. I cant believe she went into your house!!!
