I bought a CPU at a garage sale and Im having problems with it. No backup discs

were available.? 1- no sound
2- has a dvd player but wont play dvds
3- has a cdrw that shows music is playing on winmedia
it is a Compaq Presario that had win98 on it. It now has xp on it.
Please no smart comments as I need help. I am semi pc literate and have checked as much as I can thru diagnostics by the pc itself.
