How to learn bargaining skills?
When I was starting on my university studies and settling on a career (a long time ago!), I had no doubt that in my case the appropriate direction was that of literature and the arts. Things like commerce and business were far too mercenary. I’m happy that I was right (for me, that is), but I’ve always had an admiration for the (good) businessman’s negotiation skills, if that’s the correct description. What I mean is the way of conducting talks/negotiations/bargaining, etc so that you get the most beneficial results for yourself or your company. I imagine they would be skills like (I’m guessing) always make sure you negotiate from a position of strength, don’t lose your head, if you make a concession get something back for it, keep the final goal in mind, don’t be bamboozled, treat problems as challenges to be overcome, don’t make hasty decisions. That kind of thing – which I imagine an experienced businessman will know how to deal with.
I’m thinking now at this late stage (I’m 66) that perhaps I should try to acquire some of these skills, which would be useful in interpersonal dealings, for example to get the fairest deal if I get a workman to paint my house or if I want to sell a used car or similar situations.
I imagine there must be good books and other resources that teach this kind of thing. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
