i am looking to build a marketplace site, kind of like ebay, but without auctions. user are able to list their products on the site. what is the best open source to use for this, joomla, magento, or another one? are there ready made sites that i can purchase?

Google Joomla! and its virtuemart plugin. You will find that they are two extremely interesting ways to start an ecommerce website. Plus its 100% open source so 100% free. Cheers!
