Had The Police survived as long as U2, would they have surpassed them in...
...popularity and album sales? I ask that because I was watching a documentary on The Police tonight, and Stewart Copeland remarked how they quit at their peak. But U2, a similar act, had they quit, I think they might have thought they were at their peak. U2 completely re-invented themselves in the 90's. One can say U2 did not even hit their stride when Copeland claims The Police had nowhere to go but down.
The Police sold 50 million records. U2 has sold 170 million records. Sting has sold 50 million records on his own. Personally, I never really cared for much of his solo stuff, so the premise of the question would be that he might have had a higher total had he stayed with The Police.
Another thing I will pose is that the absence of The Police allowed U2 to take their place, and had The Police continued on, U2 may have never been able to surpass them.
I think there are a lot of interesting explanations and possibilities, but I'd like to hear what others have to say about what might have been.
