Fraudulent car sale, what can we do?

Hi! We just bought a car from "private" seller, who says, he just got the MOT done (a few days ago). The MOT is genuine, we checked online, but once we paid and took the car home, we realised so many problems with it. We asked a mechanics, who also said, that a car can't pass MOT like that. The guy who sold the car said to us, everything was ok with it before.
They also told us, that they sold the car for a trader (who is a friend or so). So, these people weren't the registered previous owners.

Is there anything we can do (court) or is it more or less hopeless? Does anybody have experience?
