my iphone 3G says no service?

hi i bought my iphone off ebay and i put my 02 pay as you go sim card and activated, it says at the tom left corner no service. i then went on carrier and pressed 02-uk. It then said-
"rescricted network. your selected cellular network is rescricted.You can choose a different network in settings.
CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
