it's one of the oldest customs known to humanity.

Maybe the method of saying it has changed slightly over time, but people have always greeted oneanother and then asked the other person what is new, how things are, tell me a story, what have you been doing since we last spoke, blah blah.

it became so used and common like "Hi!" or "Hey!" Most of the time they could care less how you are actually doing.

Because it was what we call a NORM it is normal when saying hi to say how are you as it is normal for the person you asked regardless of how much they want to tell you to just say fine!!! Try breaking the norm and see what happens get the reactions from both sides when some one asks you how you are doing really tell them! and when you ask how are you and they just say fine say no seriously I really want to know whats going on with you and watch the reaction because you are breaking the NORM

    Hi...I'm Aliyah's mommy.
I figure they are just trying to make conversation. Some people are just friendly!

I guess it's just a habit. And most of the time, the other person knows what he means by asking "Ho are you doing?"
