You will be introducing the puppy to the cat, not the other way around. Remember that the cat is the senior resident and the top of the food chain. This puppy will be fitting into his domain :-P
Keep the puppy isolated for the first few days. Take some things that smell like him - for example, bedding or toys - and give them to Max so he can get used to the pup's smell. Then you can try letting them see each other - I would advise getting a baby gate (helpful when you have a puppy anyway) and putting it in a doorway with Max on one side and the puppy on the other. Max will probably freak out a little bit but eventually he'll figure out that the puppy is a goofball and not a threat and he'll hop over the gate to say hello.
Don't worry about him taking a swipe at the puppy - it WILL happen sooner or later. Puppies are pushy and sometimes play too rough and the only way they learn boundaries is if the cat lays down the law, which means a swat on the nose. The puppy will be a little surprised but not seriously hurt and he will know better next time.
