Tips on meeting new people?

I'm going to middle school and sadly only on of my friends is in one of my classes.I'm not good at making a good first expression,and most people call me shy.Truth is,it just takes me a while to warm up to people and places.Which brings me to a problem-I NEED tips on meeting new people.I need friends that are in the same classes and team (we are put into teams based on our classes/teachers) So tips please?
