It's hard to find any hand held games less than 50 USD, unless you're referring to something simple like a 20Q game, which believe me, a 6-7 yo girl will not especially like. The only other things similar to that include card games (poker, etc), sports stuff, and girlish things that nobody actually likes, but are targeted to parents looking for gifts for their child. I would recommend spending the few extra bucks on a Nintendo DS or something similar, as it will be top quality, much more inexpensive than other gaming systems, include games targeted to audiences of both genders and especially young kids, and will occupy a lot of her time. One of the plus sides of a DS in particular is that games for it are relatively inexpensive, though it can vary based on how new or old the game is, and the game's particular quality.
Unfortunately however, the DS has been out for a while, and I would not be surprised if Nintendo came out with a replacement for it soon.
DS is probably the 2nd most hardcore device for hand held gaming, which isn't actually very hard core, it's just that most hand held gaming devices aren't that hard core.
