Meeting someone from myspace tonight!? or not? please read!!?

I was invited to meet with someone I have chatted with on myspace. I am a 22 yr old girl. He is 26. We live very close to one another. We have exchanged email address and talked via IM and texting. From what I can tell he is legitimate and harmless. I said that I would meet with him and was planning to go to a public place etc etc.. but now I am reading about all these girls who have been murdered meeting people on myspace and am reconsidering. I don't think it's worth the risk. How can I gracefully back out of the invitation to hang out?? Or should I just go ahead and meet him using caution? Please give any advice. Has anyone met someone off myspace and had it go well?
