How long should an introduction be for a college english essay?

Is this a good introduction?
Even before the Civil War began Americans in the North grew increasingly further from those of Americans in the South. The paths taken in the economic development of North and South contributed to the animosity between the regions. Although factories were built all over the North and South, the majority of industrial manufacturing was taking place in the North. The South had almost 25% of the country’s free population, but only 10% of the country’s capitol in 1860. The North had five times the number of factories as the South, and over ten times the number of factory workers.
A good college essay will give the reader a general overview of the topic, whilst not delving into it too much. You're probably looking at a good 8 sentences, though it depends on the length and intricacy of your sentences.
THe main thing is to save the "juicy" parts for your paper, don't give away too much in the intro, you just want to lead the reader into it.
A college essay is pretty advanced and high-level, so I would recommend the introductory paragraph to be at least 8-10 sentences. However, it's all based on how much information you have. Good luck!
