...such a medieval, retrograde move? Seriously, our government plan to introduce a blasphemy law, it's unbelievable. I'm agnostic and appalled by it.

Here are some details on it: http://www.internationalfreepresssociety.org/2009/04/ireland-poised-to-pass-anti-blasphemy-law/

Here is an Irish website campaigning against it: http://www.blasphemy.ie

p.s: Muslims who are sensitive to cartoons may not want to click on the first link.

It seems that intent is a big part of the law:“Blasphemous matter” is defined as matter “that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion; and he or she intends, by the publication of the matter concerned, to cause such outrage.”
Intent is pretty hard to prove. I am sure it will pass, and that Catholic vs Protestant will not be the first case tried.

This is, to me, another attempt to give protected status to one group at the expense of most other groups. It's no secret that radical Muslims want to conquer the world. Why else has there been so much of the world falling all over themselves to appease these radicals!

Did anyone remember the "blasphemy" law or laws passed in Australia a few years back? Why? Some Muslims took offense at something--nobody has said just what--and got protection. It's no secret that Christians have been ridiculed, silenced, and so on, while others are getting ahead at Christians' expense. Don't tell me it doesn't happen--everybody KNOWS it is happening, even now!

Stand up for your freedoms before everything is taken away from you.

I just did a search on Google about the Irish law. I'm a Christian and I'm from the United States. I can't imagine what would happen here if they tried to pass a law for blasphemy. People here would protest because the law would prevent freedom of speech. I bet the government in Ireland will make a lot of money collecting fines if the law passes.

What I hate about it the most that is that it's aimed at protecting Islam and other religions that are easily offended.

Our government is very liberal, openly supports gay unions and liberal ideology and yet they're trying to pass a law without popular support and reuniting church and state. It's fucked up.

Wow. That really is horrifying. When are people going to wake up and realize what freedom of speech and freedom of thought mean for society? Everyone's so worried about being offended, they've forgotten any principles of liberty they once had.

I'm in America, but if there's a petition or something I can sign, I'd be happy to oblige.

At least their government will have a model to base their actions on - the Taliban.

The United Nations has a proposal (Resolution to Combat Defamation of Religion) that would make it a crime, even within the U S, to criticize or defame a religion. No more Yahoo R & S ?
