You can download a free program called OpD2d. This is a direct-to-disk utility that records audio from your sound card.
See below for the URL to download it.
Install OpD2d.
Launch the program and use your mouse to point to the different controls on the interface. Pop-up help will quickly explain each function.
Choose where you will save your audio file (in .wav or mp3 format) then enter the Windows audio mixer:
Start
Menu
Programs
Accessories
Entertainment
Volume Control
and select STEREO MIX as your source.
Begin streaming your audio and try recording for a few seconds. Then, listen back to the output file you just recorded and if it's too low or to hot (distorted), adjust the level of input in the Windows Mixer.
Tips:
Although it doesn't tell you anywhere on the program, to exit OpD2d, press ESC and it closes.
