Packet sending/recieving rates when connected to the internet are crazy!? Help!?

When connected to the internet from my desktop PC the ratio of the amount of packets sent to those that are recieved is incredibly high. 79000 sent to only 63 recieved.

This ususally leads to my USB wireless adapter overheating...and hence my computer freezing and shutting down.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?
