Msn Messenger: You are connected to the internet through a wired network connection?

i'm having problems connecting to msn messenger 7.5, i have virgin broadband and when ever i try to connect to msn messenger it says the message in my question above. I also get this message

*Signing in to MSN Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailabe. Please try again later. 800401f3*

If anyone could help that would be great as i'm getting fed up of using the internet explorer windows messenger
