Is it ok to combine left and right audio signal using a mono signal

Is it ok to combine left and right audio signal using a mono signal

splitter? mono tv, stereo source, no mixer? Want to make sure this will not damage a device expecting a mono signal, or that connecting two stereo signals to a single mono input will not cause damage to the source stereo device either...
Connection would be made with a mono splitter in reverse...
