a home theater system is a system that is defintley surround sound, and is meant to play the sound back on DVDs like in a real theater. a HiFi music system is a music system that usually can only play cd's, and in some really expensive ones Super Audio CDs, and can be stereo, since thats what cd's are in, or surround, but its usually not used. For music alone listening, you could spend less money on a hi fi system and get the same quality as you could for a more expensive home theater, or you could get one thats way better, as home theaters aren't really that good for listening to music on. There are some things that are hi fi music systems that you can attach to more speakers to make it a home stereo, but there more expensive. anyway, the best for listening to music alone is definatley a hi fi music system.
