Funny problem with 2005 cavalier stereo?

we just switched out the stock radio for an aftermarket in a 2005 cavalier and we ran the 12v switched wire to the fuse panel as i saw in around 20 online and paper manuals yet when the radio turns on the odometer reads error and all the guages stay in the rest positions, i turn the radio off and they all work perfectly, can somebody help i have never seen this before.

I am not really sure of what you did wrong, but there is something really wired up wrong. I have the same car as you do, after market stereo installed and I do not have that problem. You need to make sure that you have the harness wired up correctly, and make sure that the 12V lead is the one that you have going to your fuse box. Or you could just buy the expensive adaptor for like $100, the one that they say if you do not use your air bags adn such will not work anymore, which is total BS. But something is wired really wrong. Like I said check it and make sure everything is wired correctly, color to color and such. I will check tomorrow after I get off of work which wire goes where. Also you should look into www.j-body.org, they will be able to help as well.

Why don't you just hook it up to the factory harness, like everyone else does?
