What does it mean to have fluid behind your ear?

I went the doctor today for a sore throat, nothing major. She mentioned that the inside of my ears are red and they have fluid behind them. They're a little sore, but I barely notice it.

I was prescribed an antibiotic, Amoxacillin (sp?), to clear up my throat and I guess my ears.

I'm just now wondering what's the deal with fluid being in my ears. I'm sure it's common but it sounds strange at least.
