Sleep paralysis happens when your brain wakes up faster than your body.

Your brain secretes a chemical that temporarily paralyzes your body to keep you from walking around and acting out your dreams. I've had it happen to me a few times, and while it is a bit alarming it's usually harmless.

If you mean, you are awake mentally but the rest of your body is still in sleep mode.....YES i have that too and it is very scary. Try sleeping on your side, it might help. Also, sleep deprivation and nasal/other obstruction can make it worse. When i have it, i can hardly breathe - the only thing i can move is maybe my little finger, and that is only just a little. It takes an enormous amt of effort to wake up when this happens. Any genius who invents a machine will really help the thousands of us who suffer from this (or maybe millions). Someone earlier mentioned narcolepsy. Google that - or sleep paralysis.
