why did this happen after i used clean & clear?

so have been using clean & clear for months now and this has never happened before. so yesterday after my shower i got out dried off a little and then used clean and clear.. after i had it on my face i had to text my friend and it was a short text and only took maybe a minute. then my face started to really sting. so i quickly washed it off. i washed really thoroughly and it continued to sting for about 15 more minutes. why did this happen??

(its the foaming kind of clean & clear if that makes a difference)
