Please Help. Bulging Disc & Ssi?

I had an MRI several years ago. It shows a bulging disc. I stop going to doctors due to lack of insurance. I have pain everyday. My boyfriend assists me in my day to day activities. I would like to apply for SSI. I am scared to death. I read to many horror stories (80% cases denied and years of fighting). Can I qualify? What should I expect? I haven't seen a doctor in years. I have my old MRI results. I take over the counter medication for the pain. It provides little relieve. I don't work. I used to be my father's caregiver (without pay) but longer can help him. I have no income. What question will be asked? How can I win? What should I expect? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your response
