My dad is having pain from his hips to this thighs. I don't know what it is.?

His brother told him that it might be some kind of nerve problem because the pain is going from on place to another. It makes sense, but I don't think so. My dad used to play soccer and he said that's when it started hurting. He hasn't been playing for a while, and now it's hurting again. Before, it used to hurt when he bent down, now it's just all the time. I'm not sure what it is, and i want some idea of what it is before he goes to the doctor. thanks.
