Girlfriend with depression - should I walk away?

I've been in a relationship for 9 months with someone I'm crazy about but for the last 5-6 months she's been suffering from depression - feels numb, little to offer the relationship, just wanting to run away to her folks whenever she can. She's recently started therapy and believes this is a factor causing it - lots of stuff being thrown up etc.

Thing is, I'm struggling to know what to do. She admits she's "being a nightmare" (her words) just now and has little to offer a new relationship. My friends tell me to walk away as the person who helps you through the depression is rarely the one you stay with when you get better and she will see me as a counsellor not a lover.... I don't want to walk away cos I love her. But I know it's not always that simple. Advice gratefully received!!!!
