I was wondering, and the funny part is that I am very good at situps, and walking/running, but I can barely squeeze 3 pushups out! And I don't like doing the prissy ones.
So do pushups work the pecs?

So do pushups work the pecs?
yes they do
the width and placement of hands decides which sections of the pectoral are developed most
widely placed hands focus stress on the part of the pectoral beside the shoulder
narrowly placed hands focus stress in the center of the chest. consider touching your pointy fingers and thumbs into a spade ('diamond'). this is also excellent to develop the triceps
as for raw bulk, the gains are limited compared to things like bench press but not insignificant
your glandular and hormonal disposition, nutrition and overall health play into how much is gained. some people are predisposed as less able to develop bulk
in terms of overall fitness rather than bulk, it's preferred over bench because bodybuilding requires a large caloric, and in particular protein, intake to keep up with damage done to the target zone during workout. within most amateur bodybuilding regimens this results in the bodybuilder belly (which is cut up later through a week or two of intense cardio and low caloric intake)
on the other hand, a tough regimen of pushups and other more light fitness training does not entail the necessity for large caloric / protein intake. one may develop the pecs (or whatever) more slowly and thus better maintain healthier fat composition along the way
think soccer vs football
