Could it be the kitten or just a coincidence?

My husband has lived around cats all of his life, and we even got a kitten right after we got married, and he has never shown any signs of being allergic to cats. A few months ago our cat disappeared and we just got a new kitten exactly a week ago today. Last night he started coughing and wheezing, and his eyes were extremely itchy. He has had some sneezing and itchy eye problems before we got the cat due to pollen outside, but this was noticeably worse. Could it be the kitten, even though he has been around cats and never shown any signs of cat allergies, or is it just a coincidence? Also, would it take a week for the symptoms to show up?

I think it is more of a coincidence....

but some cats are long haired....and could cause more of those allergies to crop up. By any chance, is the new kitten a long haired breed?
