Casual drinking affect your health that much?

For my new years resolution I thought maybe it could be that I would stop drinking. Now first of all I am not an alcoholic or anything I just drink when I find it necessary. But i notice that when I am at a party and not drinking its usually a complete waste of time, boring, and I am not as social. It's like once I start drinking everyone goes "Oh there he is!" and the fun commences.

The thing is I have been trying to make a turn in my health. I would like to think I have been eating fairly well and I workout regularly. For awhile I have been interested in mixed martial arts and other martial arts and I read up on some of these disciplines and I have heard that for your diet you should exclude alcohol.

And lastly I will make this part short but, sometimes I think I go overboard but nevermind that is not about health.
