Perhaps your dose isn't high enough. Check with your doctor and see if he/she will approve your dose to be raised.
Yes you can, meds only help subdue the symptoms of the panic attack and help you relax.
Once you have panic attacks and they keep coming, the disorder officially becomes panic disorder and it doesn't just "go away." The attacks may be longer and longer apart, but typically medications do not "cure" you from this.
Xanax is a short acting Benzodiazapene and you may find better benefit from something long acting to take 2 times a day such as Klonopin with Xanax or Ativan for breakthrough in an acute episode.
Also try some non medical approaches like
talking, music, soothing music, warm baths, scents like lavender or honeysuckle and deep breathing.
