HD-DVD problems?

I have a Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player, and a Philips HDTV from 2004, with HDMI and component inputs. The HDMI cable I have appears to be 1.3.

The component inputs work fine with this player, but when I try to make an HDMI connection, I get a black screen and no sound. I want HDMI, since my player will not upconvert DVDs without it. Is there a certain kind of HDMI cable I should have, or something else I should do?
