Best way to hook up 37" Toshiba HD to DVR box & DVD player?

I have a 37" Toshiba Flat Screen HD TV, and I am wondering the best way to hook up a Charter DVR box to the TV, and also hook up a Surrond sound DVD player. I have the DVR hooked up now with HDMI from back of box to tv, and also HDMI from DVD to TV. It just seems like the picture is off somewhat, and sometimes the screen will freeze when I switch between DVD & DVR. Not sure if better off using plain old Coax for hookup from DVR to TV or ? I am new to this flat screen HD thing, and never had a surrond sound DVD player, so don't know if I should hook that up direct to the tv for all stations to run thru the DVD, or just leave as is. Any advice would be appreciated.
