The Southern Ocean is a big area for whale hunting. mainly for the southern right whale. Japanese whale hunting ships are targeted by Greenpeace in this area every year.
Another area for concern is the sea around Tonga where several species of whale have breeding grounds. The govenment of Tonga are looking at opening up the area for hunting due to internal tribal pressure and because the Japanes government are spending a lot of money in the pacific island nations in order to buy their votes at the international whaling commission.
