Suggest best hiking boots?

I am looking into gettings hiking boots as a christmas gift. Does anyone know the best all around boots that there is? Boots that are good for winter and summer. They have to be good for hiking. They should be water proof [of course] too. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
