LG Rumor Canadian Reception Issue?

So i bought a LG rumor yesterday, and activated it. Then, I tried the text messaging and it was okay because i could send messages, but i couldn't receive any. I called into Virgin Mobile and they explained how I did not have a 1X icon on the top of the phone, and that I could not send/ receive..

The thing is I live in Toronto, and there should be great reception. so i don't know what to do about getting it, as VirginMobile said they're calling technicians in.. does anyone know what to do?
