But your question raises deep issues. We humans can survive only through collective cooperation and total indifference to each other would certainly end us for good!! But we are too clever to allow that. What we are doing is creating a fine balance between indifference and concern purely governed by self-interest and in the ultimate analysis, self-interest lies quite a lot in collective interest too.
