I am sure there are invention help agencies who evaluate the product (something like inventright, veryvery new, etc., I guess) but how do I know that if the gizmo is promising they won't take it and leave me out?

you could find your own investors then hire a promoter. Do an infomercial or something.
I found an inventor fraud site...whether or not that is reputable I don't know.
You need to research this item first, making sure that you are not taking on some one else's idea,or invention.Try the chamber of commerce where ever you live and without giving out your actual idea, ask how to copyright it and how to investigate it as well .I really don't know what else you can do other than what i said for you to try.I hope that this is a helpful tool for you to at least try.Good luck and best wishes to you.Ps,yes on one of the answers that you received they where talking about the poor mans copyright, yes do this, but also before doing anything else other than that, research it .
I'm not really sure, but you can patent your idea by putting it on paper and posting it to yourself and most importantly, not opening it! That way if someone has the same idea in the mean time you can prove it by showing the document, as it will be unopened and dated
Good luck with your gizmo
