Antique metal small gadget - what is it?

This metal gadge is 4 1/2" long. One end is 2 inches long and about 1/4" diameter with a hole at the end. In the middle is a round dial that is about 1 1/2 x 1 1/2". On the dial it has "The L.S. Starrett Co. Athol Mass U. S. A". On the dial (which doesn't turn unless you unscrew it). There are numbers starting at 100 and going down in incliments of 10 with 90 over 10; 80 over 20, until you get to 10 over 90. It has been stored in a box for 15 years and I dont know how much older it is than that.

In case you have not check the Sterrett web site. For what it's worth they make top quality products that are kept in families for a long time.

Starrett makes precision measuring devices mostly for machinists. It sounds like it might be a last word test indicator # 711 but I can't be sure. If you go to ebay and search for Starrett you will find all sorts of instruments made by them.
