Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS, Inc.), has announced that customers can now access two additional services, Amazon Glacier and Amazon Redshift, from the Sydney Region.Since launching the AWS Sydney Region in November 2012, ANZ customers across a wide variety of business sizes and industries are deploying and accelerating their use of AWS. Customers have grown to over 14,000 users including Atlassian, Advive and nearmap. The launch of Amazon Redshift and Amazon Glacier from the Sydney Region are a further demonstration of the momentum of AWS across Australia and New Zealand.
Amazon Glacier is a secure, reliable and extremely low cost storage service designed for data archiving and backup in the cloud. It addresses challenges that organisations commonly face with traditional, on-premise data centers, including over-paying for data archiving capacity that sits under-utilized, yet is resource-intensive and costly to maintain.
The service is ideal for data that is infrequently accessed, yet is still important to retain for future reference. Examples include digital media archives, financial and healthcare records, raw genomic sequence data, long-term database backups, and data that must be retained for regulatory compliance. With Amazon Glacier, customers can reliably and durably store large or small amounts of data for as little as $0.01/GB/month. Also available from Sydney Region is S3 lifecycle archive to Glacier, a solution for Amazon S3 that enables customers to utilize Amazon Glacier’s extremely low-cost storage service for data archival.
Amazon Redshift provides a fast and powerful, fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service in the cloud. Traditional, on-premise data warehouses are complex and resource-intensive to administer, often requiring skilled external consultants to operate. In addition, the capital and operational costs associated with building, maintaining, and growing self-managed, on-premise data warehouses are very high. Amazon Redshift not only significantly lowers the cost of a data warehouse, but it also simplifies and speeds the analysis of large amounts of data by automating the common tasks associated with provisioning, configuring, monitoring, backing up, scaling, and securing a data warehouse.
With Amazon Redshift, customers can dramatically increase query performance when analysing virtually any size data set, using the same SQL-based business intelligence tools they use today.
With both Amazon Glacier and Amazon Redshift, there are no upfront capital commitments and organisations can elastically and quickly scale their usage up or down when needed. Also available from the Sydney Region is S3 Lifecycle Archive to Amazon Glacier, a new storage option for Amazon S3 that enables customers to utilise the extremely low-cost storage service for data archival that Amazon Glacier offers.
