In 2007 I whined and whined asking for an iPhone Software Developer's Kit. Back then I asked for five apps. It took two years, but today I've got them all. The last one just came in yesterday.

It's not Voice Candy, but Voices looks as good, if not better: Retro tape recorder and microphone, cute icons, simple touch interface, and sharing via Twitter, Facebook, and eMail, so you can spook everyone with that infernal Reverse Voice effect. For $1, it's impossible to resist.

Now that I think about it, most of the apps I pasted in this graphic are now in the iPhone in one form or another.

Bad news for Dell. With quarterly earnings reports in, their year-over-year revenue has dropped 15% to just shy of $13 billion, and their net income dropped 54% to $337 million. Surprisingly, Dell's home PC business is up 17% from last year, but they're making less money off it, with revenue in that sector down 10%.

With absolutely no practical use for it whatsoever, I'm lusting hard after this 16-button, arcade-style MIDI controller available in a solderless kit you can assemble in just 5 minutes.

For sale November 30th in a limited run of 200 units, the kits run around $125 (plus the cost of buttons, as I understand). As for the final built product, it features 16 programmable buttons and LEDs that allow you to cue your MIDI samples with all the finesse of button mashing Shredder to death.

The only possible point of improvement would be a coin slot mandating occasional quarter-purchased continues. Or, you know, the addition of even more buttons (which is technically feasible with some modification to the kit).
Image: http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2009/11/500x_asus1201_hero.jpg On one hand, the Asus Eee 1201N (http://gizmodo.com/tag/asuseee1201n/),...

On one hand, the Asus Eee 1201N, the first Ion-packing Eee, will arrive December for $500. That includes Win 7, a dual core Atom processor, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD and 12-inch (1366 x 768) display. But on the other...

...should we consider $500 a good deal?

Yes and no. The formfactor is thin and quite small—1.3 inches thick and just 3.2 pounds. That's great. It's a bigscreen netbook...which I guess is a small laptop.

I mean, I'm not arguing this is probably the most promising netbook of all time.

But remember when we were getting countless Core 2 Duo computers from Dell/HP/Etc for like this same price? Yeah, they were chunky machines. But what happened to those computers? Where did they go?

I know I'm not hallucinating here.

Yes, the 1201N looks like a very cool little laptop, and I'm pumped to use an Eee that can handle HD video on a beautiful screen and through tempting HDMI-out. I'm not really upset about the Eee itself. I'm upset that the budget, jack-of-all trades laptop has virtually died as we've seen this artificial performance cap put on the budget laptop market whiled netbooks ballooned to $500-$600. Then again, maybe Ions have enough power that none of us will mourn the loss of cheaper, fatter Core 2 Duos. When reviews hit and the dust settles, we'll know for sure.

Until then, read Laptop's impressions: [Laptop via Netbook Choice via Engadget]

Image: http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2009/11/500x_imationprowx_wusb_computer_straighton.jpg ...

I get that it is cool technology, but I don't get the Imation Pro WX. It's the world's first Wireless USB disk drive, sure, but there are already drives that are Wi-Fi enabled. So, how is this different?

Imation argues that, by providing a one-to-one connection over the air, the Pro WX Wireless USB hard drive "limits the possibility of signal interception." That's a pretty vague claim to me. They also argue that it works like any other USB drive, although it only transfers data at 15 megabytes per second. That's not too fast compared to a Network Attached Storage drive over Wi-Fi.

And then, even while you don't have to connect it to the computer with a cable, you have to plug in a USB key. So why not just leave a regular drive on the desk, and plug the cable for a better transfer rate at a much cheaper price? And if you want wireless, why don't get a drive that is Wi-Fi enabled?

The only good argument for the Pro WX is simplicity: You don't need to connect to a server using the network, the drive just pops up in your desktop. But then again, connect to a networked drive is not that difficult. Certainly, not difficult enough to pay the $500 that this 1.5TB drive costs.
Image: http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2009/11/500x_quantum_computing.jpg ...

In the future, quantum computers will accomplish in seconds what would take years with our best computers today. Physicists at NIST have made a significant leap towards this goal by demonstrating the first "universal" programmable quantum information processor.

In other words, this is the first time anyone has developed a processor that can handle any set of instructions for more than one quantum bit or "qubit." Rapid progress when you consider that the first single-task quantum processorfirst arrived on the scene less than a year ago.

The NIST team performed 160 different processing routines on the two qubits. Although there are an infinite number of possible two-qubit programs, this set of 160 is large and diverse enough to fairly represent them, Hanneke says, making the processor "universal." The researchers used a random number generator to select the particular routines that would be executed, so all possible programs had an equal chance of selection. The random programs avoided the possibility of bias in testing the processor in the event that some programs ran better or produced more accurate outputs than others. Each program operated accurately an average of 79 percent of the time across 900 runs, each run lasting about 37 milliseconds. To evaluate the processor and the quality of its operation, NIST scientists compared the measured outputs of the programs to idealized, theoretical results.

The programs did not perform easily described mathematical calculations. Rather, they involved various single-qubit "rotations" and two-qubit entanglements. As an example of a rotation, if a qubit is envisioned as a dot on a sphere at the north pole for 0, at the south pole for 1, or on the equator for a balanced superposition of 0 and 1, the dot might be rotated to a different point on the sphere, perhaps from the northern to the southern hemisphere, making it more of a 1 than a 0.

Huh? Yeah, it's a bit confusing, but you can get the basic idea by checking out our Giz Explains on the subject. Just know that programing with multiple qubits is a major turning point in creating the truly "super" computers of tomorrow. [NIST and Ars Technica]
The ones skinny people in skinny jeans use to take pictures of themselves dancing, or looking very serious, but not really? This is that, as a projector.

The HypnosEye throws up a few red flags right out of the gates: Instead of connecting to your iPod or iPhone's dock connector of video-out, it simply magnifies your screen, like your math teacher's old overhead projector. This means it'll project almost anything portable with a screen, which is fantastic! This also means that, since the only light source is the backlight on your device's screen—this thing isn't even powered—that the image quality shown above is probably pretty close to accurate. Charming incapability: in!

The HypnosEye can be imported for about $80, which isn't a terrible deal, assuming you'll be doing most of your projecting in perfect blackness. Stuck inside a white-satin-lined coffin, buried unusually deep, at night? Get the HypnosEye! Happen to be on the dark side of the moon during at the beginning of its cycle, in a tent, with a projector screen handy? Get the HypnosEye! Etc.

The New Oxford American Dictionary declared "Unfriend" the word of the year. It beat out hashtag, netbook and sexting, among other nominated words. Oxford defines the verb as: "To remove someone as a 'friend' on a social networking site such as Facebook." I think they should include offline usage, too, like when you stop calling people back entirely or leave people at rest stops on road trips. What, you guys don't do that? They are not pasted in Photoshop. They are not giant tapes. They are not even painted. They are bas-relief mosaics made with old wood cuts. There are more:

According to Ron van der Ende:

I collect old doors and stuff. Old painted wood that I find in the street. I take it apart and skin it to obtain a 3mm thick veneer with the old paint layers still intact. I construct bas-reliefs that I cover with these veneers much like a constructed mosaic. I do not paint them!

I want some of these so badly.

I want to find more (any) time for my painting, but with so many things to do, my artwork usually stalls. Like this half-rendered art piece, crashed and showing Mac OS X's spinning beach ball of death.

It's a painting replica, painted with acrylic on top to make it look half-baked, then fitted with an electromechanical rotor that spins the infamous Mac OS X beach ball on top of it. Oh you clever James Theophane you.

I didn't know, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I brought an ancient and non-functioning Macintosh Plus to the Apple Store in the Meatpacking District in NYC, and this is what happened.

Overall, they were surprisingly unfazed by my request for repairs. They were impressed that I had it, and seemed genuinely interested in helping me get it fixed. They couldn't do anything for me, since Apple only keeps equipment from the last five years on hand, but they pointed me towards Tekserve, another Apple-centric store in NYC.

Thanks to Nick McGlynn and Gawker.tv for shooting the hidden camera footage!
I can't tell if he actually felt bad when he said the above at a recent meeting with Yale Law students. I kind of feel an evil, dark smile inside.

Even as part of a big company, and as a consumer, and as a guy who loves technology and loves gadgets and all the interesting things that are happening on the Internet, I kind of agree with [the criticisms] I actually care a lot about fair use… What we're really focused on in our business right now is the exact copy.

I really don't get it. If he really thinks this, why doesn't he advise another course of action? Señor Fricklas, no comprendo. [Ars Technica]
